Ledley King and Robbie Keane lift the Carling Cup

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, masterminded by boss Juande Ramos, master of the Cup success, pulled off an amazing 2-1 victory after extra time against London rivals Chelsea.

Spurs were out of the blocks from the first whistle with Robbie Keane rattling in a shot that was deflected wide, then a header from Chimbonda rattled the Blues crossbar, followed by Berbatov glancing a free header wide, it was more than 20 minutes before Chelsea registered any intention of breaching the Spurs defence. But it was the Blues that broke the deadlock, totally against the run of play. A free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, the 3rd in quick succession was slotted inside Robinson’s left hand post by Drogba.

A resillient Spurs held on in there and it paid off when a handball from Wayne Bridge resulted in a penalty mid-way through the second half, which was casually slotted home by Berbatov. The game could have been won by Spurs in 90 minutes had Zokora been clinical enough to convert his one on one opportunity. But victory was gained 4 minutes into extra time through the unlikely Jonathan Woodgate, converting a Jenas freekick that was parried onto Woodgate’s head by the advancing Cech. The remaining 25 minutes of extra time was largely backs to the wall defending, but to a man, from Robinson all the way through to Berbatov, they did the job that was required and the League Cup was on it’s way back home to White Hart Lane. A fantastic result, on a day when Chelsea were taught a lesson in how to play football.
